  1. Hi Dr. Chapman,

My name is Ashley Aratani and I am currently a 3rd year medical student studying at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine. I am very interested in learning more about trauma and disease management in rural areas. This program sounds like a fun and exciting way to learn medicine! I am looking to possibly participate in this elective in April 2013.

Logistically, I was wondering what prerequisite courses as well as paperwork would need to be done. Also, about how much would this experience cost (travel, lodging, food, etc.)? Is there a particular person I can contact for this information?

You had also mentioned that research is a possibility. What types of projects are currently being studied? About how many patients do you see in a day and what is the patient population like (how many locals vs. visiting surfers)? From the camp site, do physicians visit other villages? Aside from trauma, what medical problems do patients seek treatment for?

I apologize for this long post, but this opportunity sounds amazing!

    Thanks,
    Ashley

  2. Hi there,

My name’s Katie Attwood. I’m a Scottish medical student studying in my first year at Edinburgh University. I bizarrely had a dream last night about becoming a medic that followed and assisted surfers and thought that i’d google it-and its a real thing!!

I’m hoping to intercalate after my 2nd year in tropical disease with Spanish on the side to allow me to travel with my degree.
Is there anyway to get work experience with you for next summer. Where are the camps based?

    Thanks, Katie
