Introducing Dr Elizabeth Willsey, surfer, and shaper
Resident Doctor in Family Medicine in British Columbia, Canada.
FAVOURITE SURF DESTINATION:
North Shore of Oahu, Hawai’i & Byron Bay, Australia.
I was born in a small town in Canada and I’m a member of Rama First Nation. When I was younger, it was on the North Shore of Oahu when I caught the surfing bug and worked hard to spend my summers in Hawai’i surfing and doing marine biology research work. I went back to study my university degree in Canada and at that time an opportunity arose to do an exchange at the University of Queensland. During that stint in Australia, I fell in love with the point breaks of the northern New South Wales coast of Australia. I have been splitting my time between Byron Bay and Canada ever since. When I’m not at work or surfing, I enjoy shaping surfboards, skiing, yoga, and recently have taken up flight training for my helicopter pilot’s license.
SURF TRAVEL EXPERIENCE:
Hawaiian Islands / Australia / Indonesia / Canada (Nova Scotia & British Columbia) / California / Mexico / Costa Rica.
EDUCATION & WORK EXPERIENCE:
Medical Degree – University of British Columbia
Family Medicine Residency – University of British Columbia
Big Wave Risk Assessment Group Level 2 certification
Research Interests – I have a keen interest in skin cancer prevention and management. I worked on research project focused on melanoma at the University of Queensland previously and plan to continue skin cancer work in my future career.
