Dr Rogier Steins Signs Up For The Surfing Doctors

Dr Rogier Steins is a Dutch doctor currently in his last year of GP-training. During his 3rd year of medicine he joined a student organization (SPIN) in Utrecht, The Netherlands, which is involved in surfing, snowboarding, skateboarding, wakeboarding and kitesurfing. During this period Dr Steins surfed in France (Biarritz, Molliets, Lacanau, Saint-Jean-de-Luz), Spain (Zaurautz), Maroc (Taghazout) and South-Africa (Cape Town) where he did an trauma surgery internship in Groote Schuur Hospital. When he graduated he decided to become a snowboard teacher and completed a snowboard instructor course.


Current Position:
Family practitioner trainee in Utrecht Medical Center, The Netherlands.

Local Breaks:
Hoek van Holland, Scheveningen

Favourite Surf Destination:
Cape Town, South-Africa. I used to go surfing after my trauma surgery internship in Groote Schuur.

Surf Travel Experience:
Spain (Zarautz), Portugal (Sagres, Ericeira), Indo (Bali), Morocco (Taghazout), France (Biarritz, Molliets, Lacanau), Costa Rica, Tenerife.

Non-Surf Travel Experience:
I like to snowboard in Austria and France. A few years ago I had an amazing trip to Lapland (Sweden) were we combined dogsledding, backcountry and heli snowboarding. Although I have to admit that I crashed a snowmobile after a jump in the lake. You can ask me about this story after you offered me a beer😉

Education and Work Experience:

Currently in training to become a GP in April 2019. Before my GP-training I worked at the Department of Surgery in Diakonessenhuis Utrecht for one year and also at the Department of Emergency medicine in HagaZiekenhuis, The Hague. In the past years I participated in the ATLS, APLS, ASLS-course (Advanced Surfing Life Support) and most recently I completed the Mountain Medicine course in Silvretta, Austria.

Any other information you would like to add about yourself:
I love to combine my love for extreme/outdoor sport with medicine. I would like to travel the world, meet inspiring people while going on a crazy adventure and provide health care to patients who need it the most.
