The Playgrounds form another essential element of the Surfing Doctors’ work in Indonesia and host some high-quality waves.

A Place That Slows Everything Down

The Mentawai Islands sit slightly apart in the Surfing Doctors story, not outside it, but off to one side. Kandui and the Mentawais are part of the Surfing Doctors package.

If G-land is the proving ground and Nias the long conversation with a community, then the Mentawais are where the edges soften. Kandui, in particular, feels like a place where the pace slows just enough to notice what is actually going on around you.

Kandui lies approximately 100 kilometres west of Padang, strung along the northern end of the Mentawai chain, surrounded by water that appears to be permanently in motion. Getting there can be challenging. Long boat rides, changing light, weather systems rolling through without warning. By the time you arrive, the outside world feels distant and slightly irrelevant.

The Mentawais, and in particular the Playground area, is a dreamy, world-class surf destination.

Waves That Shape the Work

This is surf country in its purest form. Reef passes carved by tide and swell. Jungle pressing right up against the shoreline. Waves that have been mythologised for decades and still somehow live up to it. You have to see Rifles to believe it.

The names are familiar to anyone who has stared at surf maps late at night. Nokandui, Rifles, Bankvaults, E-Bay. Even Beng-Bengs, A-Frames, and 4-Bobs. Perfect, mechanical, and some of them utterly unforgiving when mistimed.

These are not waves that tolerate complacency. The reefs are pretty shallow. The take-off zones are precise. A small error can become a very real problem very quickly. For the Surfing Doctors working here, most cases are surf-related. Lacerations, reef impacts, and infections that arrive quietly and escalate if ignored.

Decisions Made to the Rhythm of the Ocean

Logistics are never far from the mind. Boats dictate access. Tides dictate timing. Sometimes the weather decides what is possible.

What the Mentawais offer the Surfing Doctors is not structure, but contrast. The lessons gathered here are subtler: how isolation changes behaviour and risk tolerance. How quickly minor issues can become serious when distance and timing intervene.

Doctors returning from time in the Mentawais bring back more than case notes. They bring back a better understanding of how the environment shapes outcomes. An appreciation for how planning must flex when the ocean, not a schedule, sets the terms.

In the Mentawais, especially at Kandui, the work happens in a place that feels almost unreal. Dreamy, heavy, and beautiful. In a place where the waves are world-class, the risks are real.
