The Irish natural-footer just did his rotator cuff off Sumatra, but hopes to be ready for the upcoming Surfing Doctors Annual G-land Conference
What is your nationality?
Irish.
What is your current position?
I’m a PGY4 doctor and am about to start an RMO post at Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth.
Tell us about your education and work experience.
I completed my undergraduate medical degree at the University of Galway in Ireland. During my intern year I rotated through ICU, respiratory medicine, vascular surgery and general medicine. I then spent six months working as an Anaesthesia SHO and have worked as a locum SHO for the past 18 months, mainly in general medicine and emergency medicine.

Have you found your medical niche yet?
Not yet. I have a broad range of interests including anaesthesia, critical care, radiology, interventional radiology and general practice.
Where is your local surf spot?
I’ve most recently been living in northwest Ireland, but I’m definitely a blow-in rather than a local. I grew up on the east coast where there aren’t many waves. I’m now moving to Perth and am looking forward to discovering some new surf spots.
What is your favourite surf destination?
Sumatra and the Mentawai Islands.

Where have your travels taken you?
I’ve travelled through Zambia, Morocco, Sri Lanka and Indonesia, including Bali, Sumatra, Simeulue, the Mentawai Islands and Java. I’m currently in Sumatra.
What has been your best surf trip?
A 10-day trip to Morocco with a group of good mates. It pumped for the entire trip.
And your worst?
An earlier trip to Morocco. There were no waves, and six of us came down with violent gastro while sharing a dorm room with just one toilet.

What do you love most about surfing?
Spending time in the ocean with friends.
What’s the best surfing advice you’ve ever received?
“It all starts with a good bottom turn.” I’m still working on that one.
Who is your favourite surfer and why?
Mason Ho. He’s incredibly entertaining to watch.
What’s in your current quiver?
My daily driver is a 6’1″ Pyzel shortboard, and my step-up is a 6’6″ DL Predator.
