Joe Newman joins the crew at the Surfing Doctors.
“I am Billy Newman’s older brother – he joined a couple of years ago when he was a medical student and never shuts up about his G-Land trip with Surf Docs.”
Background
Nationality?
Australian and English
Current Position?
Resident Medical Officer (PGY2) in Coffs Harbour
Education and work experience?
I grew up in Forster (a small town on the east coast of NSW, Australia) and studied at UNSW in Sydney and Coffs Harbour. I’ve been working in Coffs Harbour since I graduated in the class of 2023!
Medical interests? Have you found your niche?
I love primary care/general practice – plenty of varied presentations, but most importantly, an excellent work/life balance! Otherwise, I quite like obstetric medicine, but the lifestyle seems pretty brutal.

Local surf spot?
Diggers Beach – a small, beautiful beach that almost always has something to ride!
Travel
What is your favourite surf destination?
This is a tough one! In Australia, it’s hard to go past Angourie or Lennox Head (I’m a natural footer obviously). Overseas, I’ve had great surfs in Bali, although the crowds are insufferable these days!
Travel experience?
I’m fortunate to have done a decent bit of travel. From a surfing perspective, Hossegor in France, Joaquina in Brazil, Bali numerous times, and New Zealand are a few of the standouts.
Best surf trip ever?
I’m tempted to say New Zealand last year. I flew over the pond with my dad, rented a van and drove the length of the South Island’s east coast over 10 days. Cold water, but no crowds and super fun waves! I even managed to hit the mountains for a few days snowboarding!
Worst surf trip ever?
Camp trip down the coast near Scotts Head with a couple of mates. We were hoping for a few fun, uncrowded waves for a couple of days but rocked up to zero swell and pouring rain overnight, leading to a flooded swag. It was a solemn drive home.
The best thing about surfing?
Spending time in the elements, going fast and having time to daydream in between waves
Top surfers and equipment
What was the best advice you have ever given about surfing?
Relax when you are getting smashed.
Favourite surfer in the world and why?
Ethan Ewing has a very silky style and rips some crazy turns, or Kolohe Andino solely when surfing 1-foot waves.
Current go-to surfboards? (make and dims)
- 5’6 JS Black Baron twinny groveller.
- 5’10 Sharpeye Inferno 72 (one of the best boards I’ve ever ridden).
- 6’2 LSD Hammer.
