Nathan Cash Joins The Surfing Doctors.

Australian doctor Nathan Cash is spending his locum year the way plenty of Surfing Doctors would understand: living out of a camper, working along the way and chasing waves around Australia. With a couple of G-Land trips already behind him and rural generalism somewhere on the horizon, we caught up with Nathan somewhere between the Sunshine Coast and Broome.

Education and Work

I completed my undergraduate degree in Biomedical Science at the University of the Sunshine Coast, followed by a postgraduate Doctor of Medicine at the University of Western Australia.

I completed my internship at Geraldton Health Campus with WA Country Health Service, before working as a resident at Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

I’m currently having a locum year, travelling around Australia in my camper, chasing waves and working occasionally along the way.

Medical Interests

I’m still largely undecided about which specialty I’ll pursue, but I’m leaning towards rural generalism.

Local Surf Spot

I’m currently living on the road, so I don’t have a true local spot at the moment. Growing up on the Sunshine Coast, though, I’d have to say my favourite local is Pita St, Peregian Beach.

Favourite Surf Destination

Indonesia has to be the best country I’ve visited for surfing. There’s an abundance of waves, warm weather and it’s great on the budget. What’s not to love?

Travel Experience

I’ve visited a lot of places around the world, but I still have plenty of surf trips I want to add to the list. I’ve done multiple road trips through Central America and a few ski seasons in Canada and Australia.

I’ve also had a blast going to G-Land with the Surfing Doctors. I’m currently travelling around Australia, living in my camper and towing a boat. I left the Sunshine Coast in Queensland and, at the time of writing, I’ve just arrived in Broome, WA.

Best Surf Trip Ever

South Sumatra. I went to Krui in 2021 with some mates I hadn’t seen in a while. Fun waves, loads of Bintangs and a much-needed break from medical school.

Best Thing About Surfing

The best thing about surfing is that no two waves are the same. It’s such a difficult sport. You spend years chasing those few seconds on a wave, and those seconds are so addictive.

The fact that so many things need to come together to get that perfect session makes it so rewarding. From the places surfing takes you to the people you meet, there’s nothing else like it, and I hope I’ll be doing it longer than Kelly.
