German cardiologist Lilian Fee Schatz has swapped Hamburg for Indonesia while taking a sabbatical, spending much of her time between Bali and Sumbawa. With more than a decade of clinical experience and a particular interest in cardiovascular health, sports and lifestyle medicine, she is the latest doctor to join the Surfing Doctors community

Nationality?
German.
Current position?
Cardiologist, currently taking a sabbatical and spending most of my time in Indonesia – with significantly more time in the ocean than in the hospital at the moment.
Education and work experience?
I am a board-certified specialist in Internal Medicine and Cardiology from Germany. I have more than 10 years of clinical experience, including emergency medicine, intensive care, echocardiography, interventional cardiology/cath lab and, most recently, outpatient cardiology in Hamburg.
Medical interests? Have you found your niche?
Definitely cardiology – particularly cardiovascular imaging, prevention and lifestyle medicine. I’m also very interested in sports medicine and the connection between exercise, nutrition and cardiovascular health.
Local surf spot?
Uluwatu, Bali.
What is your favourite surf destination?
Indonesia. It’s hard to beat the combination of waves, warm water, nature and lifestyle here.
Travel experience?
I’ve travelled quite a bit, but Indonesia has increasingly become my second home. I currently split much of my time between Bali and Sumbawa.
Best surf trip ever?
Indonesia – especially the time I’ve spent surfing around Bali and Sumbawa.
Worst surf trip ever?
There is no such thing as a bad surf trip. 😉
Best thing about surfing?
That it completely clears your head. When you’re in the water, nothing else really matters – you’re fully present. And there is always something new to learn, no matter how much you improve.
Best advice you were ever given with regards to surfing?
Send it.
Favourite surfer in the world and why?
Bethany Hamilton – because she makes the nearly impossible possible.
