From Western Australia’s remote coastline to the Mentawais, new Surfing Doctors member Liam Hubble has built his medical career around rural hospitals while chasing waves whenever he can. We caught up with him to find out more.

Australian.
Current position
Resident Medical Officer (RMO) at Broome Hospital in Western Australia.
Education
Doctor of Medicine (MD), University of Notre Dame, Fremantle. Completed medical school placements and internship at Geraldton Hospital before moving into rural medicine.
Medical interests
Rural Generalism with a strong interest in emergency medicine.
Travel
I’ve travelled extensively up and down the Western Australian coastline over the years. It started with diving, but surfing eventually took over. I’ve also spent plenty of time exploring Indonesia, chasing good waves whenever I could.
Local surf spot
Surf is pretty rare in Broome, so I’d have to call Cable Beach my local. Before moving north, I surfed Explosives in Geraldton all the time. It’s a fun, bowly left-hander that handles the pumping southerlies Geraldton reliably dishes up through summer.
Favourite surf destination
The Mentawais. Hands down.
Best surf trip ever
An off-season trip to the Mentawais. My mate and I surfed perfect Burgerworld for hours without another person around. That’s pretty hard to top.
Best thing about surfing
There are so many things. Sharing the stoke after a good wave. Finally making it back out after wearing a solid set on the head. More than anything, though, surfing forces you to be completely present in that one moment. It clears your head and leaves you feeling recharged.
Best advice you’ve ever received
“Paddle hard, son. Time to earn your stripes.” — a crusty local from Kalbarri.
Favourite surfer
Torren Martyn. I’d give just about anything to surf like that bloke.
Current boards
My everyday boards are a Channel Islands 6’1″ New Flyer (epoxy) and an old but much-loved Island Surf 6’6″ fishtail mid-length. I also borrowed a mate’s HaydenShapes 6’1″ Holy Grail recently and absolutely loved it. That’ll be my next board.
