Travel experience?
I grew up as a competitive surfer, privileged to travel around Australia and compete at different destinations like North Stradbroke Island, Bells Beach, Snapper, etc.
During the school holidays, my family would travel to Gnarloo and Red Bluff for surfing trips, which was amazing.
I’ve done multiple Mentawai boat trips growing up, which introduced me to some of the best waves in the world.
I’ve surfed in Papua New Guinea, Bali, Sumatra, France and Spain.
I love any holiday involving sports, so I’ve also been lucky to travel to Japan and Italy snowboarding and skiing.
Tell us about your best surf trip ever.
When I was 14, I went on a surf trip to Simeulue, a remote island in Sumatra, with my dad. It was the best surf ever with no one out. It was so remote; the waves were incredible, and the place was beautiful. The RVCA team was there doing a photo shoot with their surf team, and I got to surf with some of my favourite surfers ever.
While we were there, one of them had a nasty accident and face-planted into the reef. My dad was the only one on the island with a medical background (rural GP), so he took the surfer to the island’s hospital and stitched his face back together. It highlighted the importance of medicine and was the reason behind my wanting to get into medicine in the first place.
Tell us about your worst surf trip ever.
Bali trip. I surfed in Canggu, but it was crowded, the waves were tiny, and the water was so dirty.
What is the worst surf injury you have ever had to treat?
I was surfing Supertubes at Smiths Beach and landed on my coccyx on the reef. It ripped through my wetsuit, cut my back and left a nasty bruise.
The best thing about surfing?
Surfing keeps you physically active and serves as a form of meditation. Being out in the water brings me a sense of calm and peace. It has opened doors to meeting like-minded people worldwide and allowed me to travel to some of the most amazing places.
What was the best advice you have ever received regarding surfing?
When I first learned to surf, someone told me that rather than taking off on a wave with my board straight to the beach, I should angle it in the direction I wanted to go. Absolute game changer.
Favourite surfer in the world and why?
Jack Robinson. He is so nuts at surfing, I love his chill vibe, and he is also so kind.
Current go-to surfboards? (make and dims)
5’11 DHD MF Ducks Nuts.
Micro Mal. I’m unsure of the dimensions, but it is the sickest fun board.
